How to Get the Most Out of Your Marketing Agency: Give Better Creative Feedback

By: Shannon Simpson, Account Manager

A strong agency partnership is not just about great ideas. It is about collaboration. And one of the most important ways clients can strengthen that partnership is by giving clear, productive creative feedback.

Good feedback does more than move a project forward. It leads to stronger work, faster timelines, and better results.

Start with the Goal

Before reacting to design or copy, revisit the objective. What is this piece meant to do? Who is it trying to reach? Grounding feedback in the goal helps ensure revisions stay focused on what actually matters.

Be Specific

Vague feedback like “I don’t love it” or “can we try something else” can slow things down. Instead, call out what is or is not working and why. The more clarity you provide, the more effectively your team can respond.

Separate preference from strategy

Not every reaction needs to drive a change. It is helpful to distinguish between personal preference and what is best for the brand or audience. Strong agencies will push for what works, and what is on-brand, not just what feels familiar.

Consolidate feedback

Whenever possible, gather input from all stakeholders before sharing it with your agency. Clear, unified feedback prevents conflicting direction and keeps projects moving efficiently.

Trust the partnership

You hired your agency for their expertise. The best results come when feedback is a conversation, not just a list of edits. Be open to recommendations, ask questions, and work together to find the strongest solution.

As an Account Manager, I see every day how thoughtful feedback strengthens not just the work, but the relationship behind it. When there is clarity, trust, and a shared focus on outcomes, the work gets better and the impact goes further.

That is when marketing does what it is meant to do. It helps brands grow with intention, builds real relationships with the people they serve, and creates a stronger sense of connection within the communities around them.
